Adrian slammed the door of his white van and strode up the garden path. He was still seething. How dare they come to his place of work and question him like that? The boss hadn’t been too happy, giving him sidelong glances and pulling him up for each and every mistake he made. Eventually, Arnold had sent him home. Adrian hadn’t been in the job all that long and he really needed the money. Employers weren’t exactly falling over themselves to offer him work with a history like his.

And it was all that bitch’s fault.

Jacqui.

He’d been in a bad mood ever since her name escaped the mouth of that detective.

Two plastic carrier bags swung from his arm as he unlocked the front door. It didn’t look like anyone was home, which wasn’t a bad thing. At least he wouldn’t have to explain why he’d been sent home from work. Kicking the door open, he stepped into the hall.

“Mason?” he called out, slamming the door shut behind him. “You here?” With the silence that greeted him, he guessed not. Where was that good-for-nothing brother of his? “Could do with a hand here, you know?”

Still nothing.

Sighing, Adrian made his way towards the kitchen, heaving the bags up on to the worktop. He saw his mother’s coat hanging up behind the kitchen door, and her handbag on the side. But the house was in darkness and there was no sign of her.

Snapping on the kitchen lights, he picked the bags up and headed for the utility room. He’d managed to sneak out the back of the shop while the boss was serving; he hadn’t seen Adrian stuff two carrier bags full of sausages, steaks, lamb cutlets, and enough minced beef to sink a ship.

He knew he was treading on thin ice — very thin ice — and he’d more than likely get caught one day. The law of averages said he would. But, until then . . . the temptation was too great.

And temptation was one of his many downfalls.

Take Jacqui, for example. She’d been bad news from the moment he’d met her, but . . . there was something about her that kept him coming back for more. When they’d first met, she’d needed him. She was young and naive, trying to get by on the streets, but she had a rebellious, independent streak. He’d liked that about her — in the beginning. But she grew in confidence and started telling him what to do. He hadn’t liked that so much.

Pushing thoughts of Jacqui from his mind, he yanked open the door to the fridge-freezer. After rearranging the contents to make room, he filled it with his latest haul. He needed to cut back on the pinching — they already had more meat than they knew what to do with. Slamming the freezer door shut, he flicked the switch on the wall thermostat and heard the aged boiler clunk into action. He needed hot water for a shower. He stank of meat — like he always did.
